JOE NAVARRO: A MAN YOU DON'T LIE TO

SportingLife Poker 21 Oct -- The World Series of Poker has had one stalwart over the past few years. The type of guy you don't want to lie to, and definitely the type of guy who makes you check your cards before you hit the table. But who is Joe Navarro?

"Poker players lie all the time," says Navarro, and as a man who emerges from the shadowy hallways of the FBI, you can bet that he knows how to recognise a lie when he sees one.

The investigator and poker enthusiast turned lecturer currently gives instruction to the best players on how to recognise professional play at the tables.

The tilt of a head or a vocal inflection can give away the whole game.

"Poker players pretend they are strong when they are weak or weak when they are strong," he says. "The truth is they can all be read. You can have a poker face, but I've yet to see someone with a poker body."

The World Series of Poker Academy instructor is something of a big cheese over in Vegas.

Navarro used to be an expert in nonverbal behaviour for the Bureau, and has been involved in nearly every U.S. spy investigation between 1993 and 2003.

Originally hailing from Cuba, the 58-year-old gained American citizenship at age 18.

Navarro possesses a rare skill -- to be able to read the mood of the player opposite you is nine tenths of the game.

"When you are feeling good _ or have a monster hand _ your body will manifest what it feels," he says. "You get happy feet. Your feet begin to bounce up and down like a kid going to Disney World."

"The involuntary nonverbal mannerisms dictated by the brain will always betray the strength or weakness of a player's hand," Navarro says.

Take that, Hellmuth.
